Fall Decorating with Blue and White

Although it still feels like mid-summer in Chicago, I have been starting to think about fall decorating.  I have been seeing many pretty autumn ideas that incorporate blue and white elements.

Here are some ways that you can use blue and white in your fall decor.

Place a pot of mums in a blue and white planter and add a few pumpkins to the mix. I love the heirloom varieties, and Trader Joe’s will start to carry them soon for reasonable prices.

I purchased a white pumpkin at Michael’s, and my daughter is going to try to make it into one of these Chinoiserie varieties for me using a blue Sharpie marker. I will let you know how it comes out! Some beautiful hand-painted ones are available for purchase on Etsy.

Marbleized pumpkins are beautiful too.  If you click on the photo link you will get a tutorial in how to make them.

  1. I’ve done the chinoiserie thing with ornaments and a Sharpie. Very quick and easy. I have used a Sharpie paint pen and acrylic craft paint on the pumpkins. The only tip I have about Sharpie on the pumpkin is that she might want a broad tip for filling in areas on the bigger surface. Getting large areas filled in with reg sized Sharpie would take for – evah and might be streaky. It’s fun and kind of addicting to make them 😂 Can’t wait to see it!

  2. Good morning!!! Lovely Fall pictures.. I love the orange and blues together. Like Robin said I can not wait to see how the Chinoiserie pumpkin turns out! I absolutely love those. They are certainly a statement maker. Have a fabulous day!.,

    1. Thanks so much Tam! I love blue and orange together too and also yellow mums and blue and white looks fabulous. I will keep you posted on my daughter’s progress on the pumpkin. Right now she has so much homework and hasn’t had a chance to start it.💙

  3. Lovely selections, Elizabeth! Although I can’t believe it’s that time of the year again… I live two hours South of Chicago (Urbana) and the weather felt tropical over the weekend so I’m still not into the fall decorating mood. But blue and white china is so beautifully complemented by the orange mums and pumpkins… love your images.

    1. Thank you so much for stopping by Eva! I just love your blog and IG feed and am so glad to connect with you! 💙 I agree with you that it is too warm to think about fall in Illinois right now. As long as it feels like summer, I am going to pretend it is still summer! We northerners need to embrace the warmth as long as we have it because goodness knows we will have the other extreme soon enough! All the best to you! Elizabeth

  4. Wow all these pictures look fabulous! I love fall colors, so everything looks really beautiful with the different shades of orange. I especially like the blue that you threw in. I never knew that blue would look that good with orange 🙂 I wish I could decorate my dorm with all these colors and flowers!

  5. I love the orange and blues! What’s your advice on decorating in terms of knowing how much decor to use? There is a fine line between a tastefully decorated space and one that looks too busy or cluttered.

    1. That is such a great question! It truly depends on your personal taste. Some people are collectors by nature an others are more comfortable having fewer things. I think it is a good idea to start minimally and then you can add items until you are happy with how things look. I think if you only add items that you love you will be happiest. There is no rush to finish a room. It is much more fun and interesting to add things as you find them.
