Wallpapered Ceilings

Wallpapering a ceiling is hardly a new idea, but the technique seems to be showing up with greater frequency recently.  Wallpaper on the ceiling adds an element of surprise to a space, bringing dramatic flair to another dimension of a room.

In some rooms, the walls and ceiling use matching wallpaper, which can create a cozy, den-like feel:

Other times, the walls are painted in a neutral shade, and the ceiling is the only surface that is wallpapered. This approach leaves the walls free for decoration and makes the ceiling the focal point:

In other instances, the walls are boldly painted, and the ceiling is dramatically wallpapered for extra effect:

Sometimes, especially in bedrooms, the ceilings are wallpapered to resemble the sky:

If you like the look of a wallpapered ceiling, I would advise you to hire a professional to install it!  Painting a ceiling is challenging work, and I can only imagine how difficult it would be to wallpaper a ceiling.  Also, I would limit wallpapered ceilings to one or two rooms in your house. It would lose its drama if it were used too frequently.

What do you think of wallpapered ceilings? Would you be willing to give it a try?

  1. I can’t even commit to loving a wallpaper long enough to put it on one wall much less a ceiling. I love the look but I have wallpaper commitment issues 🙂 I have painted a couple of ceilings pale blue – porch and 2 bathrooms, throwing it back to my lowcountry roots! maybe the painted ceilings are my first baby steps to someday wallpapering a ceiling! All of your images are fabulous.

  2. I don’t know that I could be brave enough but, scrolling through your lovely pictures, I do love the Bluebirds (House of Jade Interiors) and the kitchen-floor-looking wallpaper in the Aidan Design (DC Showhouse) picture. That Blue Library room in the House Beautiful shot…Love! *stars in eyes*

  3. I don’t see myself papering ceilings in a house unless it looked like the old tin ceilings or the Victorian ornate plastered ceilings. I have seen these type designs in paper at some home improvement stores. They come in white so you can paint them. Still not so sure about that either!

  4. Fantastic photos! I love the idea of wallpapered ceilings, however I can’t bring myself to do it unless I’m in the house I know to be my forever home. So for now, I have painted all of my ceilings either blue or gray. They look great!
