Urban Window Boxes

In large cities, where there is little land for gardens, people often plant window boxes on their small balconies or outside their windows. Here in Chicago, the window boxes start to appear in late spring and early summer, bringing color and beauty to our urban landscape.

European city dwellers seem to be especially skilled at creating gorgeous window boxes, as seen in this building in Paris:

Or in this magnificent one in London:

There are some spectacular examples of urban window boxes in American big cities, as well. Here is some window box beauty in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood:

I  found a few other pretty window boxes on my recent walks around Chicago:

I have read that there are now self-watering window boxes, making it easier to have window boxes in all your windows.  What a great invention!

I hope you enjoyed these beautiful window boxes as much as I did!

  1. Oh, I love urban windowboxes. I was born in Charleston, SC which may have more windowboxes per capita!! They are everywhere. I think I was predestined to love them. But just to be sure I go the message, my mother put windowboxes on my childhood playhouse growing up in the Washington, DC area. I took a zillion pics of windowboxes in Europe as well. What a cheerful post!!

  2. I love window boxes for all seasons. They can be a fun way to add color after Christmas during the not so bright and cheery winter season. I believe I spotted a window box by your door? – Beautiful. The idea of a self watering window box is genius!! I love some modern technology 🙂 Happy Friday!

  3. Good morning
I have the self watering window boxes. When we go away for the weekend you fill the cylinder that sits inside the box and it takes the water when needed. Such a great invention.
Living in a condo similar to an apartment we do not have much room for flowers so the window boxes are perfect.
    Have a wonderful weekend
    Much love,

  4. Love this post! I owned an Interior Landscaping company in Boston for 20 years. We did container gardens and window boxes (in addition to our main focus: tropicals for commercial spaces.) One of my former “window boxes” is included in your post (the one on Acorn Street, Beacon Hill.) Terrific!
