I keep a file folder of house-tour magazine articles that I cut out and save. I was flipping through the contents of my folder recently and came across a tour of a Florida town house that was featured in Southern Living in January 2014. I was struck by how colorful, cheerful, and summery the home was and thought you might enjoy seeing it.
The interior of the home, a British Colonial, is the work of one of my favorite interior designers, Ashley Whittaker. Whittaker’s design business is based in Manhattan, but she grew up in the Florida coastal town where this home is located.
The home is full of color! The inviting foyer is a bright and fun space:
I am always glad to see a rattan chair, a Moroccan style mirror, and some blue and white Chinese ceramics!
The living room is equally bold and beautiful. The gorgeous turquoise wall color is Pale Powder by farrow-ball. The blue walls and sand-color jute rug allude to the beach and ocean, but the furnishings are a bit more formal than in a typical beach house. The pops of hot pink, on the foot stool and in the trim on the slipper chairs and sofa pillows, add contrast, as does the bright green sofa.
The dining room is another colorful space. The walls are painted in a high-gloss celery green, and the chairs are upholstered in a bright coral. The fun colors give the formal mahogany furnishings some youthfulness and playfulness.
The den is a relatively neutral space, energized by bright coral color in the lamps, pillows, and art work. Whittaker also kept the neutrals interesting by introducing texture in the wall covering and patterns in the upholstery and rug.
In the laundry room and powder room, Whittaker adds bold wall paper to enliven these small, utilitarian spaces:
In the two rooms above, the gold mirror, pagoda light fixture, and rattan shelving add chinoiserie style to the spaces.
The serene master bedroom also has wallpaper, although the color and pattern are less bold than those in the laundry and powder room wallpaper:
The small kitchen is classic and white. The blue tile backsplash unites the room with the rest of the home:
The rattan kitchen table and chairs and the small bamboo demilune table that serves as a bar just outside the kitchen (below) are a nod to the tropical surroundings.
This town house interior design incorporates color and pattern beautifully. Wouldn’t you agree?
