Amazingly, I have never lived in a house with staircase. I grew up in a ranch house, and, ever since I got out of college, I have lived in urban apartments that are on one floor. It must be on account of this deprivation that I am enamored with staircases! I like the extra decorating opportunities that they present. For instance, I have noticed that many homes, especially large new ones, seem to have lots of extra space around the stair landings. Sometimes, this space is left bare, but in many cases it can be turned into a pretty and usable space.
Here are a couple of smaller landings that serve as a place to display decorative objects:
(You may recognize the staircase above from the Nashville house tour I shared yesterday! Here, Sarah Bartholomew has added a collection of blue and white vases on her landing.)
On the landing shown below, there is a lovely blue and white collection with a demilune table and mirror.
The landing pictured below displays a piece of sculpture on a pedestal.
Sometimes, there is room on a landing to create a cozy window seat reading nook:
(The bookcases above are a nice addition, too).
In some instances, there is even enough landing space for a small study or office, as seen below:
If space permits, you could even have a small sitting room.
I love the idea of using a stair landing as a library filled with books on bookshelves, as in the Birmingham home above.
What do you do with your stair landing?
