Naked Cakes for Spring

I have started noticing photos of beautiful layer cakes that are unfrosted on the sides. Apparently they are called naked cakes and have become popular over the last couple of years as wedding cakes.

Here are some examples of these simple and natural looking wedding cakes:

I love the addition of fresh flowers on a cake.

Aren’t they pretty? These natural looking cakes would work beautifully at a rustic country outdoor wedding.

Seeing these cakes made me think that a simpler version could easily be done for a dinner or small party at home. In fact, I think they would be perfect for Easter, Mother’s Day, or a baby or bridal shower.

Let’s look at some smaller versions of these cakes for inspiration.

Those flowers above are edible! So gorgeous for a spring party!

I think a simple version of these cakes could be quickly assembled using a store bought angel food cake or pound cake. You would cut the cake it into 3 layers, add whipped cream or frosting in between the layers and on top and add fresh berries and/or fresh flowers to the top—and you would have a beautiful and easy spring dessert fit for company.

Feeling inspired by these pretty cakes, I am going to attempt one for Easter. For my Easter project, I plan to use a boxed gluten-free yellow cake mix, make this lemon whipped cream for the filling, and add fresh berries and mint leaves to the top.

I am hoping it will look something like this one:

I will let you know how it turns out!

  1. This is an interesting idea, and it looks as if your plan will be wonderful! I liked seeing the succulents in one version (after admiring the ones you showed in your post the other day). But I think the pansies were my favorite.

  2. I build wedding cakes at a bakery and it’s amazing how much this “naked” cake theme has blown up! People are going for a more natural look that has the same elegance as a traditional wedding cake 🙂
