Rethinking a Lake Cottage Family Room

header image from House Beautiful via Coastal Home

I have a dear friend who has a beautiful weekend cottage near Lake Michigan. She has had the house for a number of years and wants to give her family room a facelift. Knowing of my interest in interior design, she sent me some photos of the room and asked me for some ideas for decorating it. She recently bought a new sectional sofa (similar to this one from Pottery Barn )  for the space, but other than that, she isn’t committed to keeping any of the furnishings. Here are 2 current photos of the weekend cottage family room:

Since the cottage is a beach house, my first suggestion would be to whitewash the walls, beams, and ceiling, using Simply White by Benjamin Moore. I think this would lighten, enlarge, and give a more coastal feel to the space.

Here are some coastal inspiration rooms that have white ceilings, beams, and walls:

To further enhance the coastal cottage feel, I would introduce blue and white (surprise!) elements–including the rug, pillows, and window treatments.

Here is my design board for the sitting area:

Here is my design board for the TV and game side of the room:

The weathered white TV console could hold (and hide) all the video game equipment and board games that are currently on the bookshelf. I would add some natural elements including the rattan roman shades, wicker stool, and botanical prints flanking the television. I would not use the ottoman that came with the sectional, because it is too square and bulky for the space. There are a lot of angles in the room, so I like the idea of adding rounded elements–including the wooden coffee table, the lamps, and the  weathered wood game table. The rug, from Dash and Albert, is an indoor/outdoor rug that would be easy to clean and maintain in a beach house.

What do you think of these ideas? Is there anything you would add or remove?
